The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) in partnership with The Woodlawn Cemetery and Conservancy and The Door - A center for Alternatives, and The Davey Institute, is inviting 30 young adults aged 18 to 24 for a ten week hands on training in learning how to create and care for different landscapes as well career opportunities in the Green Industry, one of the fastest growing areas. The mission of the pilot program is to prepare participants for entry level positions in the landscaping and horticulture sectors.
Through hands on classes at the Woodlawn Cemetery under the supervision of expert instructors from the Davey Institute, interns will learn the following: String trimming, mowing leaf and grass blowing; Landscape bed maintenance, mulching, and edging; Shrub and small tree pruning as well as perennial and small tree planting
The program will begin at The Door (Woodlawn Cemetery) the week of August 31,2020, and run through November 13, 2020. Classes will be offered Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM. All interns will be paid $15 per hour for up to 25 hours as well as certificates for OSHA 30 Hour Construction Safety and Health User and CPR /First Aid.
The Door will also provide support services with Computer Literacy and Technology access, Financial Literacy, One on One Counseling, Life Skills workshops as well as social services referrals. Graduates will also be invited to apply to open positions at The Davey Tree Expert Company, one of the leading landscaping companies in New York. The Davey instructors will also provide support for National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) certifications to be taken after graduation.
